Foam Ceramic Filter for Aluminum alloy

The Adtech aluminum factory foam ceramic filter utilizes high-quality porous foam and high-purity ceramics as raw materials, effectively removing non-metallic solid mixtures from aluminum and aluminum alloy melts. This filter is suitable for the aluminum casting industry. Greatly improved the product quality of aluminum melt products, and the product performance has also been greatly improved.

Aluminum Smelter provides molten aluminum with higher melt purity, which is a prerequisite for the continuous improvement of the quality of aluminum processed products.
For example, when using aluminum can body panels, today’s panel manufacturing usually uses Foam Ceramic Filter Aluminum alloy with 40 and 50 holes per inch (PPI).

The higher the mesh number, the smaller the pore size and the higher the filtration accuracy. The following is an explanation of the applicable scenarios, mesh size differences, and effects of high mesh filter plates:

1. Situations where high mesh filter plates are needed

• When producing high-precision aluminum products, such as aluminum for aerospace, precision forgings, thin plates and strips, etc., the purity of aluminum liquid is extremely high, and tiny inclusions (such as oxide inclusions and non-metallic particles with a size less than 50μm) need to be removed. High mesh filter plates (such as 60ppi and above) can meet such requirements.

• When subsequent processing is sensitive to defects: If aluminum products need to be anodized, electroplated, or undergo other surface treatments, or require high mechanical properties (such as high-strength alloys), tiny inclusions may cause surface defects (such as pinholes, spots) or affect mechanical properties. The deep purification requires high-mesh filter plates.

• When the risk of secondary contamination of aluminum liquid is high: If fine impurities are easily introduced during the smelting process (such as a high proportion of recycled materials and a poor smelting environment), they need to be further intercepted by high-mesh filter plates.

2. Difference in mesh size

• Aperture and interception capacity: Low mesh (such as 10-30ppi) filter plates have larger apertures (usually 100-500μm), mainly intercepting large-sized inclusions (such as blocky oxide scale, large particle impurities); high mesh (such as 40-80ppi) has smaller apertures (30-100μm), which can intercept smaller inclusions.

• Flow and resistance: Low mesh filter plates have coarse pores, small aluminum liquid flow resistance, fast filtration speed, but incomplete purification; high mesh filter plates have fine pores, large resistance, slow filtration speed, but more refined purification.

• Applicable scenarios: Low mesh is mostly used for coarse filtration (such as removing obvious large impurities), high mesh is mostly used for fine filtration (such as deep purification), and they are often used in combination in actual production (coarse first and then fine) to balance efficiency and precision.

3. Filtration effect of different mesh numbers

• Low mesh number (10-30ppi): can remove most large-sized inclusions, reduce macro defects in aluminum liquid, meet the basic purity requirements of general castings (such as building profiles, ordinary die castings), high filtration efficiency, but limited precision.

• High mesh number (40-80ppi): can effectively remove tiny inclusions, significantly reduce the content of non-metallic inclusions in aluminum liquid, reduce surface defects and internal cracks in subsequent processing, and improve the mechanical properties and surface quality of aluminum products, but the filtration speed is slow, and care should be taken to avoid clogging (the temperature of aluminum liquid and impurity content need to be controlled).

In short, the higher the mesh number, the higher the filtration precision, and the better the interception effect of fine impurities, but it is necessary to weigh the filtration efficiency and production cost, and select the ceramic foam filter with the appropriate mesh number according to the product quality requirements.
